Hanmer Clinic Peer Support
Walking alongside you in recovery
Hanmer Clinic Tauranga provides peer support for our current clients/whai ora. This personalised service supports people in their recovery from alcohol and other drug-related issues. Recovery is not a theory; it must be lived.
Addiction isolates us; recovery connects us to our true selves and others. Peer support is based on one recovering person helping another.
We do this by:
- sharing our journey to recovery in a way that will inspire hope for others,
- supporting each other in mutual, respectful, and balanced relationships,
- enhancing our social skills to allow us to live, work, and participate more fully in our community,
- learning to navigate community services and resources such as housing, social services, education and employment assistance, and health services,
- talking openly about treatment and our overall recovery experience.
We offer mentoring to:
- support you in exploring your power to recover and find your strength.
- develop positive coping skills that will help you to better manage your recovery.
- identify personal strengths that can help you reach and maintain your recovery.
Our service is provided to you through individual sessions, focusing on you to assist you in creating relationships with peers and others in a new and different way. These sessions support, promote, and enhance your growth, recovery, and well-being.
We assist you in making connections with people in the community who are in recovery, such as linking into 12-Step self-help meetings with NA and AA. We can support you at appointments such as WINZ or your GP. We can provide links to other community providers in areas such as housing or employment.
Our Peer Support Workers

For our Peer Support Worker, Michelle, addictions have deeply impacted her life in various ways, shaping her experiences and the way she views the world.
"I have a strong passion for supporting people on their journey to recovery and wellbeing, offering guidance and empathy as they navigate their own paths to healing."
Darren is a recovering addict who started his recovery journey with Hanmer Clinic and is an active member of a 12 Step fellowship.
“Part of my recovery journey and growth has been through contributing to the community with work at Waikeria Prison.
I am priviledged to walk alongside whanau and to bring my skills to the recovery space. I am a familiar face to those in the community and want to bring safety and hope to those who are choosing a new path.”

Lisa is a recovering addict with lived experience of both mental health and addiction.
"I feel passionate and privileged to be able to connect and support others on their own recovery journey one day at a time. I look forward to walking along side you in a safe, inclusive and positive way."
Peer Support Committee
At Hanmer Clinic, you can join our peer support committee. This is for current clients/whai ora who have completed the 8-week Intensive Outpatient Programme, are attending the Continuing Care Programme and have been actively engaged with it for at least twelve months, are committed to their recovery, and have a passion to help others. The committee is a small group of peers that meet monthly to plan support events and coordinate our regular newsletter. This includes a client story, events, positive quotes, 12-Step meeting lists, and other support groups available in Tauranga.
Hanmer Clinic Peer Support Facebook Group

This is a closed group that is screened for membership. Current clients/whai ora can search Facebook for Hanmer Clinic Tauranga Peer Support.
